Danone Indonesia’s Commitment to Providing Halal & Thoyyib Products for a Healthier Indonesia
Jakarta, March 14, 2025 – Danone Indonesia continues to affirm its commitment to delivering high-quality halal products that benefit the broader public. In this blessed month of Ramadan, Danone Indonesia held an Iftar Gathering event with strategic partners, stakeholders, and representatives of Muslim communities. This event served as a platform to strengthen relationships and enhance collaboration to create positive impacts for society.
The event, held in Jakarta on Friday, March 14, 2025, titled “Danone Indonesia’s Commitment to Providing Halal and Thayyib Products for a Healthier Indonesia,” also featured Dr. Ir. Haikal Hassan, SKOM., MMT., Head of the Halal Product Assurance Board or Badan Penyelenggara Jaminan Produk Halal (BPJPH), and Dr. H. Rahmat Hidayat, SE., MT, Secretary General of the Indonesian Mosque Council.
Ramadan is a key factor driving significant growth in the halal economy. During this holy month, demand for halal products and services increases, especially in the food and beverage sector. According to the 2023/2024 State of the Global Islamic Economy Report (SGIER), Indonesia ranks second in the global halal food sector after Malaysia. This report highlights the importance of the halal food market in Indonesia, the country with the largest Muslim population in the world.
Commitment to Providing Quality Halal Products and Empowering Communities for Economic Growth
Head of Halal Product Assurance Board, Dr. Ir. Ahmad Haikal Hasan, S.Kom., MMT., stated that halal certification is no longer strictly related to religion, but has evolved into a standard that adds value to products as consumer protection. Besides the commitment to halalness, BPJPH also appreciates Danone Indonesia’s initiatives to maximize societal benefits through empowerment programs.
“Halal assurance is not merely a matter of religion or standardization, it is also a form of consumer protection. People have the right to receive products that are not only halal but also safe and of high quality. For me, one of the industry actors with a strong commitment to halalness in Indonesia is Danone. I see that small and medium enterprises (SMEs) around Danone factories are being facilitated by Danone Indonesia to obtain halal certificates, including receiving support in the certification process, packaging, and marketing. If all major industry actors followed Danone Indonesia’s example, it would be very beneficial. Currently, only around 2.1 million businesses are certified halal. With support from large companies, the acceleration of halal certification for SMEs can be more optimal,” Haikal Hassan said.
The role of the private sector in driving economic growth is significant, especially through empowering SMEs to develop further and contribute to national economic improvement. Through the SME Support program, Danone Indonesia has reached over 5,000 micro and small business actors, with more than 800 SMEs facilitated in obtaining halal certification, strengthening their competitiveness in both national and global markets.
Along with Haikal Hassan, Danone Indonesia reaffirms its commitment to providing halal, safe, and high-quality products to support a healthy and sustainable lifestyle. “At Danone Indonesia, applying halal standards is not just about compliance but also a core value in providing safe and trusted products for consumers,” said Vera Galuh Sugijanto.
“All Danone Indonesia products and 15 AQUA distribution facilities have received halal certification from BPJPH. We continuously strengthen the halal ecosystem by ensuring that production processes, supply chains, and product innovations adhere to strict halal principles, including distribution stages conducted in accordance with halal standards and requirements,” Vera added.
Sustainability Efforts through Environmental Preservation and Health Improvement
Dr. H. Rahmat Hidayat, SE., MT, Secretary General of the Indonesian Mosque Council, emphasized that industry actors should not only focus on business but also on environmental preservation. He appreciated Danone Indonesia’s Positive Water Impact initiative, which returns more water to nature than is used during production. “Danone Indonesia has shown its commitment through the Positive Water Impact initiative. This reflects how the industry can dedicate itself to environmental sustainability, not just for us but also for future generations,” Rahmat said.
Danone Indonesia’s dedication extends beyond providing high-quality halal products to include sustainability and health. “In all operational activities, Danone Indonesia is committed to implementing a circular business model, including water, carbon, and packaging circularity. As a company producing health products, we also have the Join Stunting Prevention program, which involves innovations and nutritional access support for communities, such as the recent initiative for early detection of iron deficiency in children through screening targeting 1.5 million children, as well as stunting prevention and nutritional status screening targeting 1 million children,” Vera explained.
Collaboration with Muslim Communities to Broaden Impact
Beyond strengthening halal standards and product quality, Danone Indonesia actively collaborates with Muslim communities to expand education and positive impacts on the public. During Ramadan, Danone Indonesia, through AQUA, partnered in providing hydration for mosques during various iftar events. AQUA also conducted religious studies in mosques across several cities, including Istiqlal Mosque, Sunda Kelapa Grand Mosque, PUSDAI Mosque, and Trans Studio Mall Mosque in Bandung.
Vera Galuh Sugijanto expressed hope that Danone Indonesia’s collaboration with Muslim communities can bring greater goodness to society.s
“We believe Ramadan is the perfect time to strengthen bonds and collaboration. Through various initiatives, we hope to share broader benefits with the Indonesian people,” Vera said.
Hopes for a Healthier and Prosperous Indonesia
Arif Mujahidin, Corporate Communications Director of Danone Indonesia, shared his expectations regarding the event as a platform for maintaining relationships with partners and collaborators.
“This event reflects the strong collaboration we have built over time. Together, we have seen how Danone works with stakeholders to provide halal and thoyyib products and implement social and environmental preservation programs. We hope this event will further strengthen our ties and contribute to creating a healthier and more prosperous society,” Arif stated.
Reinforcing Arif Mujahidin’s message, during a religious lecture before iftar, Dr. H. Rahmat Hidayat, SE., MT, Secretary General of the Indonesian Mosque Council, prayed that all collaborations and efforts carried out by private industries like Danone Indonesia bring maximum benefits to Indonesia.
“During this blessed Ramadan, may Allah SWT strengthen our bonds and unity. May He shower His blessings upon every step we take, and turn every initiative into a means to bring wider benefits for health and prosperity. May Allah guide us to always share goodness, strengthen collaboration, and create positive impacts for others. May this Ramadan remind us to do good, help those in need, and spread blessings in our daily lives,” he prayed.
The event concluded with an iftar session, further strengthening the relationship between Danone Indonesia and its partners. This moment symbolized the unity in building a quality, halal, and thayyib product ecosystem that benefits Indonesian society.
